Motivational Interviewing (MI)

Workshop 9/20/19

Workshop objectives

1. Complete an MI self-assessment

2. Observe MI strategies for working with a client stuck in ambivalence

3. Identify strategies supporting change talk to move towards a change plan

4. Recognize the difference between sustain talk and change talk

5. Practice MI strategies for working with a stuck client

Participants will receive a binder with research supported information and an introduction to the

Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers.

Workshop facilitator

John E. Coumbe-Lilley, Ph.D

John is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Kinesiology & Nutrition at

the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has degrees in educational psychology, kinesiology and

business, sport and recreation management and is studying part-time to become a licensed

professional counselor and marriage and family therapist at North Eastern Illinois University.

He is a Motivational interviewing Network of Trainers member and completed his train

the trainer program in Albuquerque, NM in 2008. John has conducted Motivational Interview

trainings since 2009. Since 2014, John has led MI training courses for 416 graduates and

undergraduates in his department concerning the application of MI with patients experiencing

chronic health conditions and life style issues including but not limited to cardiac rehabilitation,

weight management, diabetes and hypertension. He has led MI related presentations and

workshops for Dominican University, River Forest Nutrition Department, Chicago Dietetic

Association, the Association for Applied Sport Psychology and the American Association of

Family Physicians. John developed the MI and health coaching curriculum in his department

emphasizing an MI evidence base translated through active practice using a PRICELESS

delivery model to engage learners assuring significant learning experiences. He is a member of

the Association of Applied Sport Psychology, Illinois Affiliation of Marriage and Family

Counselors and Chi Sigma Iota.
